Daily Edition PRS-900
Sony competes with the Kindle DX
The premier model of the Sony eReader, the Sony Reader Daily Edition was announced upon the release of the Pocket Edition and Touch Edition. This version in the line steps up the device, bringing it to the $400 range, enabling it to compete side-by-side with the Amazon Kindle DX. In order to compete with these higher end devices, the Daily Edition is loaded with more features, making it an exciting option for any tech enthusiast.
The PRS-900 has a large 7 inch touch screen and 3G wireless access, enabling computer free access to Sony's eBooks. It features a landscape mode in which you can display two portrait style pages side-by-side like a regular book, and the touch screen interface that separates the Sony eReader from its competition. The landscape mode is a really cool feature as it's the one thing that seemed to be missing from the other reading devices. By displaying two pages at a time, you are able to get the full feeling of reading a book, with the next page looming ahead.
The Daily Edition also features 16 levels of gray scale, giving the screen a richer view. Looking at that feature on a computer screen, it is hard to appreciate what exactly a variety of gray options might mean. However, when you use an ebook reader and are constantly exposed to a very limited palette of colors, this type of variety makes this Sony eReader stand out.
Launched in early January 2010, the Sony Reader Daily Edition is the premier Sony eReader device. It will be interesting to see as time goes on whether the device will remain a force in the market, or if its higher price tag will push customers away towards other, cheaper alternatives.
